HiETA Technologies Sponsor 2018 UWE Formula Student Team
Formula Student is Europe’s most established educational engineering competition. Backed by industry and high-profile engineers, the competition aims to develop enterprising and innovative young engineers and encourage more young people to take up a career in engineering.
The format of the event is such that it provides an ideal opportunity for the students to test, demonstrate and improve their capabilities to deliver a complex and integrated product in the demanding environment of a motorsport competition.
This year, HiETA Technologies were proud to be a main sponsor of the University of West of England student Formula team.
Part of the challenge faced by the Formula student teams is the rule requiring a 20 mm ø restrictor on the engine intake system after the throttle. This rule forces teams to redesign the engines intake system from scratch. This design process is dominated by the need for unhindered air flow into the engine allowing for the maximum possible power to be achieved. The outcome is often a complex inlet design that is difficult to manufacture, making it costly and time-consuming to produce, sometimes requiring compromises to be made in the final design.
By partnering with HiETA Technologies the UWE Formulae Student team were able to make full use of the design freedoms and speed of manufacture offered by Additive Manufacturing. We worked closely to ensure that both the flow requirements developed by the UWE team and the design constraints associated with the AM process were met. The result was a two-part build of the inlet plenum chamber including ram pipes and sensor pickups and 3 primary pipes that link the plenum and the engine.
